With limited budgets, staff cut-backs and reduced lead times, it’s a good thing. But, no matter how easy these new technologies make our lives, we shouldn’t forget the basics of our jobs. Our interactions with people are what make this industry so remarkable. Noth- ing can subsititue human communication. Meeting planner professionals agree that face-to-face contact with suppliers from site inspections to negotiating contracts, to the end result of accounting for goods and services received is a given. Seasoned professionals will no doubt agree with this thought; however, it seems that some feel that email or zoom meetings suffice. No amount of conference calls or brochures will ever replace personal contact and an actual venue visit. Get- ting exposure to facilities, especially new ven- ues or destinations, provides insight into the invaluable resources available. As a planner, you may have previously used a venue prior to your next event so the question arises, do I need to do another site inspection? Yes, you do! If you think you have seen it all, you’re wrong. Things change all the time. Since many venues have had upgrades and personnel changes, don’t underestimate the importance of a site inspection. It is important to put a name with a face, build a rapport with staff members that you need to rely on for a successful event and evaluate the facilities amenities. This is also a great time to meet with the destination’s CVB, which can help you to execute a memorable event for your attendees. Negotiating your meeting contract involves working with the venue to forge an equitable partnership, from services to upgrades, to off-season perks, in some cases. Remember, negotiating is an art form, something no computer can do for you. You are the most valuable tool you can bring to the table. Don’t forget the basics and you’ll have a successful year ahead.we'll move mountains for you. NEED VETTED TRANSPORTATION THAT SHOWS UP ON TIME? Denver is the first destination to achieve the highest level of certification. The EIC Sustainable Event Stan- dards are specific standards for envi- ronmental and social responsibility within the events industry. Created by the EIC Sustainability Committee in partnership with industry profession- als and leading sustainability practitio- ners, the requirements provide event planners and suppliers with prescrip- tive actions for producing and deliver- ing sustainable events. The standard specifies perfor- mance criteria in the areas of organiza- tional management, marketing, com- munications and engagement, climate action, water management, materials and circularity, supply chain manage- ment, diversity, equity and inclusion, accessibility and social impact. The destination standard is one of seven comprehensive standards for environ- mentally sustainable meetings. “This is a milestone achievement for VISIT DENVER and all of us work- ing to make Denver the sustainable destination of choice for convention planners,” said Richard W. Scharf, president and CEO of VISIT DENVER. “It is a great honor to be the first to earn such a vitally important certifica- tion while making a significant con- tribution toward our city’s long-term vision for sustainability.” EIC CEO Amy Calvert lauded VISIT Denver for their accomplishment. “The Events Industry Council congratu- lates VISIT Denver on their Platinum Level Certification,” she said. “This demonstrates a strong commitment to the environmentally and socially responsible practices that are needed to support long-term sustainability in our industry.” ASAE Names Susan Marchese, CAE, as VP of Marketing WASHINGTON, D.C. — Susan Mar- chese, CAE, recently joined ASAE as vice president of marketing, announced ASAE President and CEO Michelle Mason, FASAE, CAE.
