An urban hotel is playing a pioneering role in sustainability. Hotel Commonwealth in Boston, MA, is the first hotel in the city to implement a new system to divert 100% of its food waste and repurpose food that otherwise would have been wasted into a high-value, sustainable natural resource, enabling groups to effectively achieve zero-waste meetings and offset their carbon footprints through an environmentally friendly, fully circular process.
Launched last year as a pilot program, this National Circular Food Waste Partnership with Stratham-based BioGreen360, the leading innovator in distributed food waste management solutions, is already a proven success. As of January 2024, Hotel Commonwealth has diverted a total of 8.02 tons of food waste, which is an equivalent 38.37 tons of carbon dioxide sequestered. For reference, this carbon offset total is equivalent to over 231 acres of fertilizer, 633 trees planted, 1765 homes powered for 24 hours and even 98,380 miles driven.
The collaboration leverages BioGreen360’s innovative integrated technology solution, which includes a waterless distributed digestor, proprietary bio-catalysis, and a real-time data analytics package. The success and impact of this partnership are clearly shown in the data: Corporate groups and event planners can put their minds at ease knowing that when choosing Hotel Commonwealth for their meeting, they are choosing a more conscientious way to travel and gather that aligns with their sustainability aspirations. Hotel Commonwealth will even provide a certificate to the group showcasing the exact tons of food waste that was diverted over the duration of that particular meeting.
This partnership with BioGreen360 is a proven success and something that other hotels across the country can look towards as a shining example of promoting sustainable meetings and events, just in time for Earth Day!
