Puerto Rico Reopens Two International Airports To Accommodate Increased Travel Demand

Discover Puerto Rico, the island’s non-profit Destination Marketing Organization (DMO), anticipates a quick recovery for the island through the end of 2021, while keeping the safety and security of all travelers and locals top of mind. Recently released data by Adara, the world’s leading provider of traveler intelligence, reveals Puerto Rico is making an early impact in the tourism recovery for the U.S. and the Caribbean region with bookings up nearly 25% from a year ago, totaling $112 million in hotel bookings since January.
As of April 1, after nearly a year of being shut down, two international Puerto Rican airports – Mercedita International Airport in Ponce and Rafael Hernández Airport in Aguadilla – resumed commercial activity to accommodate the increased bookings. In comparison, the rest of the Caribbean and Mexico are booking 25% below a year ago, while the rest of the U.S. is booking 40% below.
According to the Destination Analysts’ April survey, about two-thirds of Americans are highly open to travel inspiration right now and the number of Americans actively dreaming about and planning travel reached a 2021 peak at 77.7%. TripAdvisor survey revealed Isla Verde in Puerto Rico secured first place among the top 10 fastest-growing destinations in the Caribbean. This follows Google Search data from this past January 2021, where Puerto Rico showed up as the most popular destination searched for in the second half of 2020 published by Go Koala.
