The Otesaga Resort Hotel, which since 1909 has graced the shores of Otsego Lake in Cooperstown, “America’s Most Perfect Village,” will make history this year by remaining open throughout the winter months. Typically, the resort closes to leisure travelers after Thanksgiving weekend, then reopens in April. But, since 2020 has been anything but typical and travelers will be looking for winter getaways where they can remain healthy and safe, cozy and warm, this seems the perfect time for the legendary resort to try something completely new … and write a new page into its 111-year history.
To make things a little easier for guests in a time that has been marked by financial challenges for so many, the resort has unveiled a series of packages and specials aimed at allowing guests to enjoy a relaxing and inviting atmosphere without breaking the bank.
Visitors should be prepared to experience the snowy serenity of the village of Cooperstown, which offers a warm winter welcome and a certain stillness that might truly be appreciated this year. The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum is always open year-round, and a winter visit means plenty of room to explore and take a deeper dive into baseball’s evolving story. Guests can also do as the locals do, strapping on snowshoes or cross-country skis and setting off across the fresh snow that blankets Leatherstocking Golf Course for a bit of exercise and plenty of fresh air. Or they can simply pack favorite books, games and screens and prepare to hunker down and enjoy being in a place that feels very homey but that – thank goodness! – isn’t those same four walls they’ve been staring at since March. In short, winter in Cooperstown is about peace and tranquility, and we can all use plenty of that right now.
The Otesaga began welcoming guests back to Cooperstown in mid-June with a full array of new safety and hygiene protocols in place. The resort implemented Otesaga CARE, a program that exceeds the sanitation standards recommended by state and federal agencies to provide a Clean And Responsible Environment for all. The Otesaga also offers modified operations of its restaurants, all in accordance with guidance from federal, state and local health authorities.
